"History is the lie commonly agreed upon." I think what Voltaire meant by this quote was that countries constantly lie to you. Every country tells you what benefits them and leaves out the bad aspects that would bring shame to them. No one wants to tell the other side of the story, everyone wants to leave it out to make their country look better. Its just like modern society. Just like you wouldn't tell your friends the whole story, you tell them your side, which of course is the version that puts you on your high horse and makes you look like the big shot.
